Growing up having a relaxer there were times I never touched my hair in between maintenance. I would let it go until it became stiff and oily until my next hair appointment. When I did try to do my hair, it didn't always go well and the growth of my hair soon became stagnant. Luckily, with much patience and consistency and learning what my hair needed, I finally achieved my goal of reaching armpit length with relaxed hair. It was a small goal, but a goal nonetheless. Now I have my own regimen for not just long but also healthy relaxed hair (no really...it's possible). While everyone's hair is different, there are some key factors that help relaxed hair grow.
Essential oils are only used to lubricate and moisturize your scalp or to seal in moisture that you already worked through your hair. Fun fact! Our scalp already has natural glands that produces an oil called Sebum. Sebum lubricates the hair shaft and the strands of hair that comes out of our scalp, this is why it’s important to use good moisturizing conditioners and deep conditioners after you wash your hair.

The natural hair movement became a liberating time for most black women. More women were loving on themselves, not giving into society standards on what “good hair” is or even just realizing how to better take care of their hair and having a healthier crown. It seemed like an exclusive club that you just had to either cut your hair or grow it out to get in! This change was amazing to see, but there is a flip side to this movement that I don't believe gets enough attention: the judgement.
The 3rd season of Insecure came and went way too fast for our liking, and we are already looking forward to season 4! Although we have to wait until next year to see if Issa is able to get her company off the ground, if Molly is able to figure out who she is or if Issa and Lawrence ever have a chance; we can still reminisce over the awesome looks from this season. While different women around me were trading in their “creamy crack” for the big chop, I was setting up my next relaxer appointment. Just like the women around me going natural, so were the hair gurus I followed on social media. It seemed like every time I looked up, someone I followed specifically for relaxed hair care were either growing out their hair or chopping it off! Luckily, others noticed noticed a gap and began to start their own channels and pages.
